Yes, #Boogieoke VII is STILL HAPPENING!
What is #BOOGIEOKE?
BOOGIEOKE is my annual karaoke BIRTHDAY PARTY! But IT AIN’T REGULAR KARAOKE.
There are some rules and guidelines, which returning competitors are more than familiar with. This year, as with everything, we have to flip the script a little.
This year, Boogieoke is Zoomieoke (not really), and we’re going to change the rules of engagement accordingly – but nothing will change with the fun! (I’m also excited that those of you who haven’t been able to attend because you live outside of NY or have challenging schedules can hopefully be with us!!)
RSVP link is at the bottom of the page, but take a minute to read the run down for this year…
OR, if you absolutely can’t be bothered to read it (but you should), there’s a brief FAQ page.
This is Still a Competition!
This is usually a team challenge, with three rounds, each with a different song category, and judges giving scores on a 10 point system for each round. For Zoom, we’re going to change it up for solo performances – but there will still be scores! And still opportunities for joint performances if you’re creative.
You Have to Do a Little Work on Your End
First, learn how to navigate Zoom if you aren’t already familiar (for those concerned about security, we’ll be in a password-protected Zoom to prevent Zoombombing). Specifically, familiarize yourself with the green screen options (I’ll send out more details).
Second, we’ll be using Zoom in conjunction with Watch2Gether, which allows everyone to see the karaoke video the performer is using at the same time.
Full step-by-step directions and breakdown are here (also linked below), and this year’s categories are listed on the RSVP link at the bottom of the page.
I was inspired by the Verzuz IG producer battles and convos around them, and these categories leave ALOT of room for song options! Please complete the RSVP link by Friday at noon (even if you might change your mind), so I can find the best possible karaoke version of your selections (because some of them are trash). If not, you’ll be able to request your song in the Zoom chat night of. If you know you’re going to have friends in the party, consider how you might perform the song together (but separately :)).
Find props, create your green screens, get into it! #Boogieoke returners, if you’re inviting first-timers, explain the spirit.
Everybody Gets in on the Best Part This Year – Judging!
I’m probably – basically definitely – going to still divide y’all into teams. And this year, EVERYBODY scores performances! After each performance, everyone will open the Zoom message board and give their scores from 1-10 based on 1. Song choice 2. Performance and 3. Creativity. But there will, as usual, be designated judges who give commentary – because otherwise it wouldn’t be #Boogieoke. Everyone’s performance scores will count towards their team scores (which means I probably won’t announce the winner until later).
Don’t worry. I’ll break all these details down in a comprehensive doc. Also, in the spirit of IG live battles, I encourage running commentary in the Zoom chat.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: Bring Party Energy!!
Don’t even worry about 1-3, the most important part is just to have a good time.
As a first, I’m even welcoming people to come through and just be spectators (I’m adamantly against that IRL). Come “through” when you’re ready, invite some friends, all that. Also, cocktails at home are heavily encouraged. Mostly, I’ll just be happy to see all your faces and that we’ll keep the tradition going for the SEVENTH year! Newbies: Welcome. We invite you in and can’t wait for you to experience traditional #Boogieoke in person. Ask anyone whose been even once; it’s a good ass time. This one will be, too.
